READ THE SERMON

January 30, 2022 – 4th Sunday after Epiphany
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“HOME IS WHERE THE LOVE IS”

In today’s Old Testament reading, God calls Jeremiah and commissions him as a prophet to the nations. The Lord promises to be with Jeremiah whatever challenges he faces proclaiming God’s word. The psalmist responds by praising God for being his sanctuary and strength when he faces challenges. In writing to the Corinthians, Paul admonishes the spiritual pride of the community. The love of Christ is not a disembodied love, but a love lived out within the community and deeply connected to the love Christ demonstrated on the cross. In Luke, Jesus tells his followers that “no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown,” a reminder that sometimes this love may be rejected.

Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth:
Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
