From the book of Acts, last week we read the first part of Peter’s sermon. Today we will read the second part in which he shocks the crowd by announcing their responsibility for Jesus’ death. Their response is: “What should we do?” Peter exhorts his audience to be baptized and 3,000 responded. In today’s psalm, God is lifted up as listening to the psalmist’s cries and meeting the need, evoking praise and offerings in response. The reading from 1 Peter reminds the community of faith that is “born anew of… imperishable seed,” they are called to love one another. In the gospel reading from Luke is the risen Jesus meets two grieving and discouraged disciples on the road to Emmaus. There he is made known to them in the breaking of the bread. As the psalmist extols God for meeting him in his place of brokenness, so too does the risen Christ long to meet us where we are broken.

“Why am I a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church? Two words keep floating up in a rather persistent way – “home” and “family” – and I realized that it is an inescapable fact that is what this church means to me. During my 40 years here, so many life events have happened and Westminster has been there for me through all those times – good and bad. It has been my home and family. They say “home is where the heart is” and I’ve found the heart of Westminster to be as open and warm as a family’s!”
