“A RED LETTER SHEPHERD”

Psalm 23 is probably the most well-known of all the Psalms. The psalmist expresses confidence and hope in God’s care, guidance, and provision. In the ancient Near East, kings were referred to as shepherds of their people. It is noteworthy that this psalm is attributed to King David, who declares “The Lord is my shepherd.” In our gospel reading from John, Jesus calls himself the “Good Shepherd.” Jesus compares himself to a shepherd who leads his sheep by calling them each by name. The sheep know the shepherd’s voice and follow him to abundant life. Our epistle reading from 1 Peter offers encouragement to early Christians who are suffering hardships because of their faith. The author uses Christ as the model of suffering from false accusations and assures Christians that Jesus will be the shepherd and guardian of those who were going astray like sheep.
