READ THE SERMON

May 14, 2023  | 6th Sunday of Easter

Rev. Christopher Roland (Chip)

“TBA”

In the scripture lessons for this morning, we have law, a plea for justice and mercy, arguments for the case of the gospel in a skeptical world courtroom and a divine Counselor – the Holy Spirit. In 1 Peter the author exhorts a beleaguered and persecuted Christian community to be steadfast in the gospel truth even when the world judges them guilty of disturbing the peace of the status quo. In our gospel reading from John, Jesus tells his disciples that the time is coming when the world will no longer see him, though he promises his continued presence through a Counselor, the Holy Spirit, who will abide with them. In our reading from Acts, Paul judiciously addresses the intelligentsia of the council of the Areopagus in Athens. He argues that the God of all creation is not bound to altars made by human hands. The God of the universe is not an unknown God, but one who is known in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
