Worship Service – August 9, 2020 – Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“SMALL BOATS AND WIDE SEAS”

The observation, “there are no atheists in foxholes” came out of the Second World War. The idea being, when we are at our most vulnerable, we turn to God, admitting our inability to save ourselves. Without any threat in our lives, we easily fall into pride and arrogance, believing we have no need for God. In Matthew’s account of Jesus walking on water to meet his disciples, Peter’s dilemma represents the situation Christians faced in the late first century and serves as a prophetic warning for disciples of all generations that followed.

Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we,
who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
