The theme of abundance and hospitality is a common thread in the scripture lessons this morning. In Jeremiah, God speaks to the fruitfulness of the land that was offered to the people of Israel out of his tenderness and love for them. The prophet Jeremiah accuses the House of Israel of squandering God’s abundant gifts and chasing after false gods. The Hebrews passage encourages mutuality of love, sharing of resources, and caring for strangers as a way to live faithfully in a Christian community. The author questions our confidence in our own knowledge in the face of our inscrutable, omniscient God. Luke loves to turn what we think we know upside down. Jesus was often criticized for sharing a table with people “known” to be inferior by those who considered themselves superior in intellect, moral turpitude, and social status. Jesus, however, commends his disciples to extend radical hospitality, welcoming as friends those people on the fringes of society, into the very center of communal celebration of God’s gracious gifts, given to be shared.

Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
