READ THE SERMON

September 18, 2022 – 15th Sunday after Pentecost
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“PAYING OFF THE PRINCIPLE”

The God we see in Jeremiah is anguished and broken-hearted. The people of Israel are sick and grieving, and God grieves with them and for them. In grim language, the psalmist laments Israel’s defeat by enemy nations. We are presented with a picture of the dire consequences foolish politics and war have on the land. In the epistle from 1 Timothy, the author urges the congregation to pray for all, including the civil authorities who persecute them. They can live peaceably with the empire and remain faithful and obedient to God, their one and only sovereign authority as revealed to them by Jesus Christ. In our gospel reading from Luke, Jesus tells the puzzling parable of the shrewd manager. When Jesus finishes telling the parable, he concludes with the famous line: “You cannot serve God and wealth.”

Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
