Today’s scripture readings proclaim God’s faithfulness in times of trouble, making a way to a brighter future. The prophet Joel speaks of the renewing presence of God, who will restore the people of Israel and their land to abundant living. God promises to “pour out my spirit on all flesh.” The psalmist responds with songs of praise. In the epistle reading from 2 Timothy, the author writes as Paul nearing the end of his life. Paul reflects on his ministry, noting how the Lord stood by him and gave him strength, even when others deserted him. The reading from Luke contrasts the obedient Pharisee, whose pride blinds him to God’s grace with the tax collector whose shame and humility allow him to be welcomed by God.

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
“Throughout the week, there are many worldly things pulling me away from my commitment to God. I come to church on Sunday at Westminster to reconnect and renew my relationship with Him. Part of my worship is to ask him for forgiveness for my lack of faithfulness. I leave, reminded that he loves me, forgives me, and walks beside me every day. What a profound blessing that is!”
