“Prophetic Perseverance”

Being a leader is never easy. Being a prophetic leader is even harder. David’s ascendancy to the throne was not peaceful, despite being blessed with God’s favor. The Apostle Paul eloquently describes one of the profound truths of the Cross – that our power is made perfect in weakness. In the Gospel reading, Jesus calls us into a radical dependence on him when he sends his disciples out with only a staff, tunic, and sandals. This combination of radical dependence and humble faith invites the Holy Spirit to bring divine power into our everyday lives.

O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving
you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we
may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another
with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
