“BEYOND LAMENT”
Each of today’s scripture lessons emphasizes the desire to encounter God. The cry of Job in his despair is the cry of Jesus on the cross. It is Psalm 22. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? The passage in Hebrews identifies Jesus as the great high priest who sympathizes with humanity and encourages us to approach God’s throne of grace with boldness. In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus challenges a rich man to go beyond outward religious observance and give up the wealth that has captured his heart and left little room for God to enter.

Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that
we may continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
