ALL SAINTS’ SUNDAY – NOVEMBER 7, 2021
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“FEASTING WITH THE SAINTS”

This morning we celebrate All Saints’ Sunday as we remember our fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ across the world and throughout the ages. The prophet Isaiah cries out for the long-awaited salvation of the Lord, which is fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ. In Revelation, we are given insight into the joy of Jesus’ final Kingdom, where death, mourning, crying, and pain will be no more. Jesus is revealed to be the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end of all creation. He invites us to join him in the heavenly banquet with the family of God, by placing our faith in him.

All Saints’ Day has been celebrated on November 1 since the year 835. Previously it had been connected with the Easter season as a feast of all martyrs. In early Christian tradition, saints’ days began as a way to mark the anniversary of a martyr’s death — his or her “birthday” as a saint. By the middle of the church’s first millennium, there were so many martyrs (particularly due to the persecution of Diocletian) that it was hard to give them all their due. All Saints’ Day was established as an opportunity to honor all the saints, known and unknown.

O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might
destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and
heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify
ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power
and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and
glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
