READ THE SERMON
4th SUNDAY OF ADVENT – DECEMBER 19, 2021
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones
“REVOLUTIONARY LOVE”
Today’s scripture readings are more of what we expect in the lead-up to Christmas. The reading from Micah reveals that the small town of Bethlehem will be the birthplace of a faithful and righteous ruler. Luke tells the story of Mary and Elizabeth, each of whom experiences a surprise divine intervention. Elizabeth, long barren, conceives John the Baptist, as foretold by the angel Gabriel. Mary visits Elizabeth after her own encounter with Gabriel and the news of her own unexpected pregnancy. Echoes of the Old Testament’s Song of Hannah and the prophecies of Isaiah are heard in Mary’s Song, known as the Magnificat, which serves as an outline and a foreshadowing of everything Jesus will do.

Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, .
that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a
mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
