READ THE SERMON

February 6, 2022 – 5th Sunday after Epiphany

“THE WONDER OF BEING CALLED”

Each of the scripture readings for today focuses on the call of God. The passage from Isaiah 6 is one of the great call narratives of scripture and is often heard at ordination services.  It outlines Isaiah’s vision of a kingdom that never ends and his willingness to be the bearer of God’s message, even if that message is difficult to bring. Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, emphasizes the grace and call of God that converted him from being one who persecutes Christ’s followers to the faith to its staunch defender. In the gospel reading from Luke, Jesus commands Simon (Peter) to try again after a whole night of futile fishing. There is a miraculously abundant catch of fish. Experiencing shame in the presence of the holy, like Isaiah, Simon responds to Jesus saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” Jesus called him to catch people and to invite them to participate in God’s kingdom living. In both stories, the Lord invites Isaiah and Simon to participate in doing God’s work.

Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth:
Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
