“TWO FAITH JOURNEYS”

In our reading from Genesis, we meet Abraham, who at a late age is called to leave the only home he had ever known to travel to a faraway unknown land. God promises to bless him and his family, but not to them alone. Abraham will be blessed to be a blessing to all families in the world. The psalmist promises the Lord will help and protect us wherever we go. A welcome assurance for anyone on a faith journey. In our epistle reading from Romans, Paul points to Abraham as the father of faith, emphasizing that Abraham was justified by faith and not by works. In this way, God’s promised inheritance to Abraham and his descendants is dependent on grace. In John’s gospel, Nicodemus the Pharisee meets Jesus secretly, by night. Jesus confuses him with a play on a word with different linguistic translation possibilities – born again or born from above – to define how one enters the kingdom of God. Those who place their faith in Jesus are given new life in the Spirit, who moves freely, just as the wind chooses where to blow. This spiritual rebirth for the family of God seals the ancient covenantal promise first given to Abraham, the father of God’s people.
