Today we observe the Festival of the Ascension, marking Christ’s ascension forty days after Easter as it is described in Acts, Luke, and Mark. In many traditions, the Feast of the Ascension is one of the holiest and most celebrated days in the liturgical year; it is also among the most ancient of Christian traditions. The Church recognizes the day of Ascension as a day for celebration because all the work that Jesus came to do on earth has been accomplished, and he returns to the right hand of God. In our gospel reading, Jesus meets two of his followers on the road to Emmaus. He interprets books from the Hebrew Scriptures to reveal he is the long-awaited Messiah. The word, “inheritance” is found in both Psalm 47 and our epistle reading to assert the theological concept of God reaching out to humanity first in calling communities and revealing Godself. Writing in the theological tradition of Paul, the author of Ephesians affirms God’s power and desire to break down diverse barriers, and to bring the world to unity in Christ. We also celebrate today Jesus’ promise that his disciples would be “clothed with power from on high” to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. That means us!
