READ THE SERMON

July 2, 2023 | 5th Sunday after Pentecost

Dr. Matthew Winkler

“CUPS OF WATER”

Today’s sermon focuses on our Gospel reading, Matthew 10:40-42.  In the very spirit of the reading itself, the Gospel section is less dramatic than the Psalmist’s cry of woe and certainly less so than the story of Abraham and Isaac at the altar.  Likewise, is it less grandly abstracted than our reading of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, with talk of the Law of Grace and of being free from sin and enslaved to God; of the wages of sin and of eternity itself!  But – just as God was not present to Elijah in the wind or the earthquake, but in the whisper – we can take a close look at our smallest reading and take home a big message from it.  Swing by in person or virtually online, as you are able, and see what this big message is, because Jesus definitely made it with you specifically in mind.
