One constant (and constantly difficult-to-deal-with) part of life is change. Each of
today’s Scripture passages focus on how events challenge us to do something or be someone
different. In Genesis Isaac has a new principal woman in his life when his mother dies and he
marries Rebekah. Paul reminds us (and the Roman church) of our desire to change from our
sin-ways to do what is right and Jesus’s saving grace. When God is involved, there are some
people who are only happy when they are miserable and will not change their perspective on
others, complaining whether the other is fasting or feasting. Jesus challenges us to change our
perspective and rely on Him.

“What goes through your mind as you sit in the sanctuary and look around?
As I sit in my pew and look up at the cross with the wonderful light illuminating it, I am reminded of why I am at Westminster on this particular day. The cross reminds me that Christ died for me and, in a sense, I am to do the same in my daily life. The brightness of the cross illustrates for me the brightness of living my life in the way of Christ.”
