Do you sometimes ask the question: Why do people do the things they do?
Here’s a better question. Have you ever asked why you do some of the things you do?
I can’t help but wonder that there were some Scribes and Pharisees whom Jesus talked about in the reading that stopped and asked themselves, “Why do we wear such broad Phylacteries, and Why do we always have to be the first?”
One such Pharisee was Nicodemus, who began questioning and found his way at the feet of Jesus; for you see, using the question of why at the right place and time may help us uncover our true motivations.

“What goes through your mind as you sit in the sanctuary and look around?
As I sit in my pew and look up at the cross with the wonderful light illuminating it, I am reminded of why I am at Westminster on this particular day. The cross reminds me that Christ died for me and, in a sense, I am to do the same in my daily life. The brightness of the cross illustrates for me the brightness of living my life in the way of Christ.”
