Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion Service
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Our reading from Isaiah has familiar verses, made so by their repetition every Christmas Eve and the popular choral work, “The Messiah,” by Handel. The prophet Isaiah speaks to a people who have been threatened, defeated and occupied by bordering nations. Isaiah delivers God’s promise that the people will one day be ruled by a divinely appointed king, who will rule with wisdom, strength, justice, and righteousness, ushering in a new age of eternal peace. The author of Titus encourages his early Christian audience to imitate Christ while they await his return. Our gospel reading from Luke tells the familiar story of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem and the angel messengers that announced the birth to a group of shepherds. This evening and tomorrow, we celebrate this world-shaking event. As we share gifts with our friends and families this season, we seek to capture the joy and wonder of the original gift of Christmas: Jesus Christ, coming into a broken world to dwell among us as the Son of God, our Savior.
