Epiphany of the Lord – January 3, 2021
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“ALL GOD’S CHILDREN”

An item on the BBC World news caught my attention this week. It may seem to be a trivial matter, but it was quite significant and addressed a worldwide problem. Australia changed one word in its national anthem, “Advance Australia Fair.” The verse, “For we are young and free,” was changed to “For we are one and free.” What’s the difference” The issue is one of belonging. The story of the wise men from the East visiting the Christ child completes our Christmas crèches and celebrates the traditional Feast of the Epiphany. The story of the wise men’s pilgrimage to Bethlehem began long before Matthew’s story, it is a story of humankind finding its way back to God.

O God, who wonderfully created, and yet more wonderfully restored, the dignity of human nature:
Grant that we may share the divine life of him who humbled himself to share our humanity,
your Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
