DAILY DEVOTIONS FOR LENT

“THE BEGINNING OF LENT”

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. In our gospel readings, we follow Jesus as he turns toward Jerusalem and the cross. At our baptism, we receive the sign of the cross on our foreheads with water, which represents Christ as the living water. The ashes used to mark ourselves with the cross on Ash Wednesday symbolize our mortality and our willingness to walk with Jesus to his cross. This service focuses on confession. Once we are honest with ourselves about the ways we stray from God, we are ready to start our journey back to God, following the Way of Christ. The ashes used to mark the cross on our foreheads come from the burning of the palm leaves from last Palm Sunday when we remembered and celebrated Jesus’ victorious entry into Jerusalem. As difficult as our Lenten journey may be, we are blessed to know that we can expect to end the season with a joyous event – the Resurrection of our Lord!

LENTEN JOURNEY BAGS

LENT is a season when many people make a special focus on enhancing their ever-growing and loving relationship with God. Christ’s life, ministry, and death are remembered during this season. It is also a time to think about how God is with us all the time.

We have prepared special Lenten Journey bags for Ash Wednesday and for the Lenten season. Each of the items has been chosen to help you reflect and deepen your journey through the season of Lent. They will also include communion elements and ashes for the Ash Wednesday service.

If you would like to have a Lenten Journey bag, please contact the church office and let us know how many you want. wpc@westminsterpeoria.org or call 309.673.8501 ext. 4. Please leave a message if no one answers.

The Lenten Journey bags can be picked up at the church in the Narthex. If you are unable to get to the church but would like to participate in this journey, let us know and we can have it delivered to your home. To receive in time for Ash Wednesday the DEADLINE IS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11.

“Throughout the week, there are many worldly things pulling me away from my commitment to God.  I come to church on Sunday at Westminster to reconnect and renew my relationship with Him.  Part of my worship is to ask him for forgiveness for my lack of faithfulness.  I leave, reminded that he loves me, forgives me, and walks beside me every day.  What a profound blessing that is!”
