READ THE SERMON

June 26, 2022 – 3rd Sunday after Pentecost
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“NECESSARY CHANGES”

Our scripture readings for today attest that the God we encounter in the Bible is one who seeks our transformation. In our reading from 2 Kings, Elisha wants to follow his mentor, Elijah, but Elijah is carried away by a whirlwind and a chariot of fire, Elisha cries out in grief and questions God. After God agrees to Elisha’s request for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, he submits himself to God and takes up Elijah’s mantle for the people of Israel. The letter to the Galatian church emphasizes the freedom found in Christ—a freedom that is not manifest in self-indulgence, but in love and service of one another. In our gospel reading from Luke, Jesus makes clear that discipleship is a radical act. As he invites people to follow him, he warns them of the cost of the decision, telling people that they cannot cling to their former lives and serve God’s kingdom.
