READ THE SERMON

July 3, 2022 – 4th Sunday after Pentecost
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“HAPPY DEPENDENCE DAY”

On this Sunday of July 4th weekend, our scripture readings direct us to reflect on the congruences and conflicts between Christian identity and national identity. What is the relationship between “independence” and the Christian gospel? In our reading from 2 Kings, an army commander’s power and wealth cannot rid him of his painful, disfiguring leprosy. Only by submitting to the authority of God’s prophet Elisha, is Namaan healed. With poetic language, the psalmist’s lament over adverse circumstances beyond their own control turns to praise for God’s saving grace. The Apostle Paul warns the Galatian congregation against submitting to others’ demands for conformity to human expectations rather than living the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus discourages his disciples from boasting of their own power for healing, which comes from God; and, from becoming discouraged when they are rejected by the people with whom they try to share the gospel.
