The prophet Hosea compares God’s loving leadership of the Israelites with a parent nurturing a child. At this time Israel is acting like a rebellious adolescent. They have rejected their parent’s instructions and values by worshipping pagan gods. But God’s anger does not last. God remembers the covenant and pledges the people will return from exile to their homeland. The psalmist reminds Israel of God’s saving actions in times of trouble, which is their assurance that God will remain loyal to the covenant. The author of the letter to the Colossian congregation reminds them that, having been baptized, they are expected to act in an ethical manner. Greed, for example, causes people to seek after other gods. In his parable of The Rich Food, Jesus explains that the accumulation of wealth, solely for the purpose of serving one’s own desires, is incompatible with discipleship.

Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“I believe in Westminster’s missions of service to others and I like how biblical scholarship is integrated with scripture, providing more insight into understanding what Christ says is important. These have only helped me to strengthen my faith.”
