READ THE SERMON

August 14, 2022 – 10th Sunday after Pentecost
Tom Clark-Jones

“WHAT NOW?”

Our Old Testament reading is very familiar, at least the last verse. God is having a contentious discussion with the people of Israel, with the prophet Micah as God’s mouthpiece. Like a parent with a child who has taken the wrong turn in life, God asks: “What more could I have done for you?” The people do not respond with an answer, instead they ask: ‘What worship offerings do we need to give you to get you off our backs?’ But God does not want a particular type of offering, God wants them to be a particular type of people – people who will do the work of justice, do acts of kindness, and to follow God’s directions obediently. The psalmist, writing as King David, poses a similar question to God. Am I worthy to “enter God’s tent?” Our society today is very judgmental and divided by these judgments. We pass judgment in our various forms of media. We do it in the Supreme Court, and even in churches. David turns the question inward: “Am I doing what God wants me to do? Am I worthy to enter God’s “tent.” This is a great question to ask ourselves and our church.

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
