14th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST | AUGUST 29, 2021
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones
“PRAISE GOD AND PASS THE ADMONITIONS”
In the second of several confrontations with the Pharisees in Mark’s gospel, Jesus argues that it is the inner attitude of the heart rather than the outer performance of religious obligations that matters to God. In the epistle reading, James outlines a theology of Christian living. The Psalm extols the virtues of justice and righteousness that mark a king blessed by God. Then, oddly, it seems at first glance that our reading from the Old Testament is about the joy of romantic love. The common thread among each of these scripture passages is God’s desire for us to have loving and equitable relationships with others. By so doing, we glorify God.

Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all
good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name;
increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness;
and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
