Each of our scripture readings for today addresses the problem of people losing their way; and how God searches for us even when we are lost or have wandered away. For Jeremiah and the Psalmist, it was Israel that ceased paying attention to God’s guidance. In 1 Timothy, the author marvels at God’s overflowing grace that redeemed him—he, who was once a blasphemer and violent persecutor of God’s people. In our gospel reading from Luke, Jesus tells his disciples two parables about God seeking the lost and bringing them back into the community of faith. This grace is available to us too. Today marks the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. We hold in God’s grace all whose lives were forever altered on that day.

O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
“Throughout the week, there are many worldly things pulling me away from my commitment to God. I come to church on Sunday at Westminster to reconnect and renew my relationship with Him. Part of my worship is to ask him for forgiveness for my lack of faithfulness. I leave, reminded that he loves me, forgives me, and walks beside me every day. What a profound blessing that is!”
