The end of the Christmas season for the Church officially ended this week on January 6. We have now entered the season of Epiphany. The liturgical season celebrates the revealing of Christ in the world – ‘the Light that entered the darkness.’ Three events mark this transforming epiphany, which revealed God’s glory: the visit of the magi, the baptism of Christ, which we celebrate today, and his first miracle of turning water into wine at Cana. Our scripture text from Isaiah is one of hope and promise and utilizes the imagery the church would later connect with baptism, “when you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.” The Psalmist reiterates Isaiah’s message that God’s glory is revealed in creation. In Acts, we hear the echo of God’s promise in Isaiah that redemption and salvation are for all creation – even the Samaritans who were marginalized by their Jewish family. Each of our scripture texts calls us to a life of holiness and renewed vocation.

“What goes through your mind as you sit in the sanctuary and look around?
As I sit in my pew and look up at the cross with the wonderful light illuminating it, I am reminded of why I am at Westminster on this particular day. The cross reminds me that Christ died for me and, in a sense, I am to do the same in my daily life. The brightness of the cross illustrates for me the brightness of living my life in the way of Christ.”
