In today’s Scripture passage from Nehemiah, Ezra, the priest, leads the restored Israelite people in a reading of the Law and a recommitting to God’s covenant. Paul extols the power of the Holy Spirit in the bestowing and activating of spiritual gifts to a congregation divided over their perceived hierarchy of gifts and judging who is closer to Christ based on their individual gifts. The congregation focused on the gifts rather than the Giver. In Luke’s Gospel, we see another scene in which the Scriptures are read to an assembly. After reading from the sacred scroll, Jesus reveals that he is the embodiment of Isaiah’s prophecy that God would establish a Kingdom marked by good news, release, recovery, and freedom. With the Spirit’s anointing, Jesus fulfilled the scriptures and invited all to participate in this kingdom.

“I believe in Westminster’s missions of service to others and I like how biblical scholarship is integrated with scripture, providing more insight into understanding what Christ says is important. These have only helped me to strengthen my faith.”
