1st Sunday in Lent – February 21, 2021
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“THE PATH SET BEFORE US”

Four days ago, we marked the beginning of the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday Service. With the Imposition of Ashes, we marked ourselves with the sign of the Cross, representing our mortality and utter dependence on God (the ashes) and the cross shape to mark the trajectory of our Lenten journey with Christ. The celebration of the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper expresses our desire for communion with Christ and our gratitude for Christ’s sacrifice for us that we may be reconciled with God and one another. If you missed the service, I invite you to view the taped service on the westminsterpeoria.org website. Today is our first Sunday worship in Lent. As usual, on the first Sunday of Lent, the gospel reading covers Jesus’ baptism and 40 days in the wilderness. Because it is from Mark’s gospel, the story is dispatched in short order. Out of each of our four readings, I believe Psalm 25 is the most direct in its portrayal of repentance and the desire to learn God’s ways so that we might journey through the 40 days of Lent on the right path.

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan:
Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you
know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through
Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
 Amen.
