Have you got your shot yet? That is the current pressing question. Vaccines work simply by introducing a small amount of a virus into the body. With a minuscule amount of the virus, the body’s immune system targets the virus with antibodies that protect us from becoming sick when the virus tries to infect the body again. Modern medicine has taught us that the cure for a disease can be accomplished, in some cases, by introducing disease into the already diseased body. The remedy for snakebite is taking in some of the same poison that the snake put in its victim in the first place. This healing occurs in much the same way as chemotherapy poisons the body to rid the body of deadly cancer cells. In our Old Testament reading for today, God has punished the Israelites wandering in the desert for their ingratitude. God provided food to sustain them, but they complained about the lack of variety on the menu. God sent poisonous snakes, which bit them. God also sent the cure, which, oddly, was a snake. Moses was instructed to raise up a pole with a snake coiled around it, telling the people to look at the snake and they will not die. In our Gospel reading, Jesus cites this passage from Numbers to explain to a puzzled Nicodemus how his crucifixion will bring salvation.

“Why am I a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church? Two words keep floating up in a rather persistent way – “home” and “family” – and I realized that it is an inescapable fact that is what this church means to me. During my 40 years here, so many life events have happened and Westminster has been there for me through all those times – good and bad. It has been my home and family. They say “home is where the heart is” and I’ve found the heart of Westminster to be as open and warm as a family’s!”
