READ THE SERMON

“A CHANGING LANDSCAPE”

Our poetic reading from Isaiah asserts that the gift of life can be found in unexpected places. The poet presents an image of teeming rivers flowing through the desert. God can make a way where there is no way. The psalmist echoes with an announcement that despite their present exile, God promises to reverse the fortunes of the Israelites and bring them home. In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he suggests that all the knowledge of his former life counts as “rubbish” compared to the value he has discovered in Christ. The gospel reading from John raises a provocative question. Mary of Bethany lavishly anoints Jesus’s feet with costly perfume despite Judas’s objection that the money would be better spent feeding the poor. Do we act with hasty, self-righteous judgment like Judas, or like Mary, who offers an extravagant gift to God?
