Today the solemnity of Lent is interrupted by the joyful celebration of Palm Sunday. Today we remember the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, fulfilling an ancient prophecy of the coming Messiah. The celebration is bittersweet because we know that in just five days the crowd’s adulation turned to rejection and contempt. Though Luke’s gospel reports the crowd placed their cloaks on the path in which he walked rather than palm leaves, these palms we hold replicate the leafy branches of Matthew, Mark and John’s account. The King of Kings humbly rides on a colt, and in so doing he fulfills an ancient prophecy that proclaims him as Lord and Savior. When some Pharisees press Jesus to make his disciples stop their proclamation, he declares that even if all were silent, the stones of the city themselves would still cry out in joy.

“Throughout the week, there are many worldly things pulling me away from my commitment to God. I come to church on Sunday at Westminster to reconnect and renew my relationship with Him. Part of my worship is to ask him for forgiveness for my lack of faithfulness. I leave, reminded that he loves me, forgives me, and walks beside me every day. What a profound blessing that is!”
