READ THE SERMON

5th Sunday of Easter – May 2, 2021
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“HOLY INCLUSION”

Our readings from Acts in the Easter season remind us that how we choose to interact with one another is critical to our living resurrected lives. Today we read about the encounter between the disciple, Philip, the Ethiopian eunuch, and the main actor in the book, the Holy Spirit. The eunuch wonders if he too is included in the prophet’s words of hope and promise for the poor, the sick, the lame, the captives, and the marginalized. Philip explains that the prophet Isaiah’s words foretold the coming of the Messiah who fulfilled these promises. Then, in verse 36, they continue along the road and the eunuch sees water and asks: What is to prevent me from being baptized?” Then from verse 36, we continue to verse 38. Wait! What happened to verse 37? Why isn’t it in our bible?

Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so
perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the
life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to
eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
