“UNDER THE SURFACE”
God’s seeds most often remain unseen before they bear fruit— similar to a seed growing and taking root in the soil before it appears above ground and its growth is visible. In our Old Testament reading, Samuel, despite his unease, obeys God’s command to anoint David, a young shepherd with no obvious qualifications, to replace Saul as King of Israel. Samuel trusts God will use David to sow the seed for Israel’s future. In the second letter to the Corinthian church, Paul, or one of his fellow evangelists, also emphasizes that discipleship demands walking by faith, not by sight. In Mark, Jesus uses the image of seeds to describe the mysterious and hidden nature of God’s kingdom.

the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
