“WHERE IS WISDOM WHEN YOU NEED IT?”
The famous American journalist, H.L. Mencken, said: “The older I grow, the more I distrust the familiar doctrine that age brings wisdom.”
We can learn from past mistakes, but that does not preclude our giving in to the temptation to make the same mistakes again or to delude ourselves that we are not making the same mistake, despite the strong evidence we are. Then there are always new choices that bring the potential to make brand new mistakes. The reigns of King David and his son, Solomon, provide classic examples of the struggle between the world’s foolishness and God’s wisdom. The psalmist declares: “1 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” John’s Gospel tells us when we are hungry in spirit, wisdom is knowing what will satisfy our hunger, not for a few hours, but for the rest of our lives. The Church is at its best, the author of Ephesians wrote when it acts wisely by doing God’s will.

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin,
and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the
fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his
most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
