13th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST – AUGUST 22, 2021
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones
“DRESSED FOR SUCCESS”
In our epistle reading from the letter to the Ephesians, the articles of a first-century Roman soldier’s outfit are paired with pious, as well as abstract, theological terms: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and Spirit. To be honest, these words make us a bit uncomfortable and do not roll easily off our tongues without adding conditions or disclaimers. The author was trying to send a message of encouragement to a congregation that struggled to live as faithful Christians in a society and under a government that played by very different rules. Jesus had the same problem convincing his disciples that he was the Messiah, but not at all what the people were expecting. Today, we live in a society that has some definite ideas about what to expect from Christians. If we were to put on our Christianity-like garments, would the ensemble fit?

Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered
together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your
power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
