“STRANGE BEDFELLOWS”
The scripture lessons today seek to uphold a strong sense of God’s action in our human lives. Although the book of Esther never explicitly mentions God, Esther’s triumph over Haman and rescue of her people is understood to be a fictional story that describes God’s intervention, through ordinary or even unlikely people, to bring about divine justice. In James’ epistle, Christ-followers are encouraged to offer prayers for healing in the hope and expectation that God is attentive to the petitions. Mark’s gospel recounts Jesus telling his disciples that all who do God’s will represent the generosity of God’s kingdom, even if they do it unknowingly. He delivers a strong warning not to hinder this work; but instead, we are to labor together in peace with whomever God has brought together to bring the Kingdom of God to earth.

O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy
and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to
obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly
treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
