“THE GREAT POWER PLAY”

The scripture passages for this morning point to God’s glory and power, but also reveal that God laid aside his power over the created world in order to share his life among creation. God answers Job out of the whirlwind to remind Job of the breadth of divine majesty and the wonder and mysteries that are beyond human knowledge. God seeks to offer some assurance that there is an order to creation and that he is not capricious, even if humans do not always understand his ways. In the letter to the Hebrews, Jesus’ perfect humility is described. Through his faithful obedience and love, Jesus left his glory in heaven to sacrifice himself and pay the ransom price for our sins. James and John make an audacious request of Jesus—to sit at his right and left hand in the glory of his Kingdom. As the other disciples react angrily, Jesus attempts to expose their self-serving intentions by teaching that honor in the Kingdom is reserved for those who serve others, not those who seek power over others.

Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your
glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that
your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast
faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
