REFORMATION SUNDAY | OCTOBER 31, 2021
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

“MATTERS OF THE HEART & MIND”

This morning we celebrate Reformation Sunday and remember the faithful men and women who have given their lives to proclaim the truth of the gospel throughout the ages. In our Old Testament reading, we meet Ruth, a widowed Moabite woman. Although she is from a tribe that is an enemy of Israel, she becomes an immigrant in Israel when she follows her widowed mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth’s loyalty to Naomi and her God will eventually graft her into the messianic line as she bears a child who will be an ancestor of King David and Jesus. The Psalmist describes a creative and loving God who cares for “strangers” like Ruth and aids the exploited and status-less – “widows and orphans” like Ruth and Naomi. The author of Hebrews proclaims that Jesus Christ, as our high priest, has fulfilled and surpassed the heart of God’s Law. In our gospel reading, Jesus informs religious leaders that the love of God and neighbor is the heart of the Law.

Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift that your faithful people
offer you true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without
stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
