“BIRTH PAINS”

Today’s Scripture readings address both the pain of barrenness and the hope of new creation. We hear the story of Hannah, the mother of the prophet Samuel. She is “provoked” by her husband’s other wife who scorns her infertility. In compassion, the Lord answers Hannah’s prayer and she conceives a son, who she dedicates to the Lord. In Hebrews, the author explains the authority of Jesus alone to forgive sins. At the end of time, Jesus’ resurrection victory will be complete, as those who love him are gathered into the joy of new creation as forgiven, healed, and restored children of God. In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus points towards the end times, describing the birth pangs of a world yearning to be free from sin, evil, and death. We are warned not to be led astray by false teachers, but to cling to Jesus for our redemption and healing.

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning:
Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them,
that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life,
which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
