1st SUNDAY OF ADVENT – NOVEMBER 28, 2021
Rev. Denise Clark-Jones
“COMINGS AND GOINGS”
Today we celebrate the first Sunday in Advent. Advent is Latin for “coming.” On our Advent Wreath, we will light the candle of hope, which commemorates the longing of Israel for the Kingdom of God. Jeremiah prophesies centuries before Jesus’ birth that a Savior will come from God, out of the line of David. Paul calls the Thessalonian church to live in love and holiness as they await the return of Christ. In Luke’s Gospel, we hear a description of the “Son of Man coming in a cloud” and a promise that the kingdom of God is drawing near. That promise was answered in the infant Jesus, Emmanuel – God-With-Us. Jesus prophesies the signs that will accompany his return and urges us to wait expectantly.

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, .
and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life
in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility;
that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty
to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal;
through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
