PALM SUNDAY starts the most pivotal week in our Christian life…
Hosanna! At our Palm Sunday worship service, we will honor and celebrate
Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. To fulfill the prophecies of old,
Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the donkey, as the people cheered, “Hosanna in the highest!”
They placed palm branches in his path and waved palm branches to honor Him.
Only He knew what the rest of the week would bring . . .
Pastor Tim Mitchell has a special message that marks the beginning of
Holy Week, the final week of Lent. Special music will be provided by Polly Brecht
Today we celebrate Palm Sunday commemorating the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Passover. The crowds swelled by pilgrims also coming to Jerusalem for this special celebration and to give Jesus a joyous welcome befitting a victorious king returning from battle. There is palpable hope that Jesus is the Messiah coming to fulfill the prophecy of the Hebrew scriptures. Though we share the joy of the crowd, our celebration is bittersweet because we know that a mere five days later the crowd’s adulations will become vitriolic insults. His disciples’ loyalty will turn to betrayal. We are invited to walk with Christ this week. It is not an easy walk, but one that is necessary. What Jesus did on Maundy Thursday, when he instituted the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, and on Good Friday, when he sacrificed his life for us for the forgiveness of our sins, reveals the path to the joy of Easter morning. Let us make this pilgrimage together this week, meeting as a community of faith to worship on Thursday evening, Friday at midday, and Easter Sunday morning.
