In our Old Testament reading from 1 Samuel, the Lord instructs the prophet Samuel to anoint a new king of Israel. The first king, Saul, had been disobedient and lost favor with God. There would be no familial line of succession after Saul. The Lord was starting over with the unexpected choice of David, a young shepherd. The psalmist uses the popular image of Near Eastern kings as shepherds. It was the divine imperative that a king should care for his people as a shepherd cares for his flock. The psalmist proclaims God, rather than a worldly king, is the one who faithfully provides for his people and desires to restore us fully. The Apostle Paul calls us to reject the darkness of evil and walk only in the light of Christ. In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus heals a man born blind, provoking outrage from the religious authorities. The Pharisees interrogate the man who was miraculously healed but reject his testimony. In compassion, Jesus seeks out the man again and invites him to place his faith in him because he was sent by God.

“Throughout the week, there are many worldly things pulling me away from my commitment to God. I come to church on Sunday at Westminster to reconnect and renew my relationship with Him. Part of my worship is to ask him for forgiveness for my lack of faithfulness. I leave, reminded that he loves me, forgives me, and walks beside me every day. What a profound blessing that is!”
