In Psalm 104 the author acknowledges that the world and all living creatures depend on God for provision and breath. This leads the psalmist to a commitment to continually praise God. Our gospel reading from John and our reading from Acts also focus on breath – the holy breath of God which creates live and enables us to receive God’s Holy Spirit. In John, the risen Christ appears to his disciples in a locked room and bestows the gift of the Holy Spirit upon them with his breath. Our reading from Acts tells the origin of the Christian Pentecost. Gathered in Jerusalem for the Jewish Festival of Shavuot, the celebration of God’s giving of the law on Mt. Sinai, the Holy Spirit descends upon the crowd. Jesus’ disciples are given the miraculous gift of speaking in the native languages of all the people gathered to hear Peter speak. Pentecost, fifty days after Easter, celebrates God’s giving of the Holy Spirit. That day Peter, quoting from the prophet Joel, proclaimed to the crowd this gift was a fulfillment of ancient prophecy. He declares that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus shall be saved.”

“Throughout the week, there are many worldly things pulling me away from my commitment to God. I come to church on Sunday at Westminster to reconnect and renew my relationship with Him. Part of my worship is to ask him for forgiveness for my lack of faithfulness. I leave, reminded that he loves me, forgives me, and walks beside me every day. What a profound blessing that is!”
