On this third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday from the Latin word for joy, we hear the Magnificat, Mary’s joyful song of praise. But first, she has some questions for the angel messenger who has told her she is pregnant with God’s Son. In our gospel reading from Matthew, John the Baptist also has some questions as he waits for his execution, ordered by King Herod. In his letter, James encourages his readers to be faithful as they patiently await the coming of the Lord, even through suffering and trial that may cause them to question their commitment to Christ. In our reading from Isaiah, the prophet promises that despite the peoples’ suffering in exile and occupation, God promises restoration and vitality for Israel in the future. But first, they must remain faithful and obedient to God, while they wait for the dawning of this new age.

PRAYER
“Throughout the week, there are many worldly things pulling me away from my commitment to God. I come to church on Sunday at Westminster to reconnect and renew my relationship with Him. Part of my worship is to ask him for forgiveness for my lack of faithfulness. I leave, reminded that he loves me, forgives me, and walks beside me every day. What a profound blessing that is!”
