Each of our scripture readings today focuses on the life of those that are blessed by God and those that are not. In Jeremiah, the Lord proclaims: “Blessed are those who trust in the Lord.” Likewise, the psalmist contrasts the fates of the ungodly and the godly. Continuing from last Sunday’s reading, Paul argues against the members of the Corinthian congregation who deny that Christians will be resurrected bodily: “If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.” By Christ’s Resurrection, we are also promised resurrection and eternal life with him. In our gospel reading from Luke, Jesus comes down from the mountain, where he went to pray and meets a crowd “on the plain.” Here he presents his four “Beatitudes,” which contrast four pairs of blessings and woes.

O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
“I believe in Westminster’s missions of service to others and I like how biblical scholarship is integrated with scripture, providing more insight into understanding what Christ says is important. These have only helped me to strengthen my faith.”
