“DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK”

In today’s reading from Mark’s Gospel, Jesus again foretells his death and resurrection to his disciples. They do not understand this, but do not ask Jesus, their Rabbi, any probing questions. Instead, they continue to argue about who is the greatest among themselves. While pointing to the example of a child, Jesus declares that “whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” Whoever welcomes a child in the name of Jesus welcomes Jesus himself. The disciples do not yet understand that it is not through ambition or self-promotion, but by welcoming the lowly, the unseen and unheard, that they will truly understand who Jesus is and how to live lives of faithful discipleship.

O God, because without you we are not able to please you,
mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things
direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
